{"id":936,"date":"2014-07-17T13:55:03","date_gmt":"2014-07-17T13:55:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.secure-bits.com\/?p=936"},"modified":"2014-07-18T14:27:44","modified_gmt":"2014-07-18T14:27:44","slug":"change-user-account-type-in-windows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.secure-bits.com\/?p=936","title":{"rendered":"How to change user account type in Windows&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In my previous blog, I&#8217;ve emphasized the importance of not using administrator account for everyday tasks, such as reading your email, browsing the web, running your programs etc. In this blog, we&#8217;ll look at how to remove the administrator access from the first account\u00a0that you have created during the Windows installation process. <\/p>\n<p>By default, Windows installation proceeds with the administrator account, amply named &#8220;Administrator&#8221;. This is the initial account that has full access to the system and installs all the necessary drivers, programs, etc. When the installation is about to be completed, Windows will force you to create a user account with a password. This account name cannot be the name of existing accounts, but other than that, you&#8217;re free to choose a name. This first account created is assigned &#8220;Administrator&#8221; rights by the installation routine and the initial &#8220;Administrator&#8221; account is disabled. This installation routine first appeared in Windows Vista and continued with Windows 7, Windows 8.x, and presumable will be the same in Windows 9.<\/p>\n<p>Back to the subject on hand and let&#8217;s remove administrator access for the first user account created in Windows&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The process is simple enough and the basic steps are:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Create a new administrator account<\/li>\n<li>Login with the new administrator account<\/li>\n<li>Change account type for the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8220;%Default first user%&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em>There&#8217;s no way to know the name of the first account that you&#8217;ve assigned on your system. For the purpose of this blog, the name of the first account is indicated by the variable of: <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>&#8220;%Default first user%&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em>Please substitute this name with your first account you&#8217;ve created during Windows installation.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 1:<\/strong><br \/>\nOpen up the &#8220;Control Panel&#8221; and you should see this, if you have &#8220;Category&#8221; listing selected:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.secure-bits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/control-panel.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.secure-bits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/control-panel.jpg\" alt=\"Control panel\" width=\"716\" height=\"354\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-940\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.secure-bits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/control-panel.jpg 716w, https:\/\/blogs.secure-bits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/control-panel-500x247.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 716px) 100vw, 716px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Select &#8220;Add or remove user accounts&#8221;, note the little shield front of it, under the &#8220;User Account and Family Safety&#8221; category. The little shield indicates, that using this step will require local administrator access, if your system had not been modified since installation. In which case, the User Access Control (UAC) warning like this will pop up first:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.secure-bits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/UAC-warning.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-945\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.secure-bits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/UAC-warning.jpg\" alt=\"UAC\" width=\"457\" height=\"355\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.secure-bits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/UAC-warning.jpg 457w, https:\/\/blogs.secure-bits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/UAC-warning-386x300.jpg 386w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 457px) 100vw, 457px\" \/><\/a><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em>The UAC window on your system will have your first account&#8217;s name prepopulated, instead of the shown <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8220;%Default first user%&#8221;<\/span> variable. You will not see this warning, if the UAC is disabled.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Enter your password for the account, click &#8220;OK&#8221;, to see the current accounts on your system:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.secure-bits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/default-accounts.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-938\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.secure-bits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/default-accounts.jpg\" alt=\"Windows default accounts\" width=\"605\" height=\"358\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.secure-bits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/default-accounts.jpg 605w, https:\/\/blogs.secure-bits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/default-accounts-500x295.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 605px) 100vw, 605px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In this window, click on &#8220;Create a new account&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.secure-bits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/new-admin.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-952\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.secure-bits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/new-admin.jpg\" alt=\"Administrator\" width=\"595\" height=\"327\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.secure-bits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/new-admin.jpg 595w, https:\/\/blogs.secure-bits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/new-admin-500x274.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 595px) 100vw, 595px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Choose a name for the new account that is meaningful for you. it can be anything you&#8217;d want. For the purpose of this blog, the account is named &#8220;Test admin&#8221;; substitute this name with your choice. Select &#8220;Administrator&#8221; for the account type and click on &#8220;Create account&#8221;, that\u00a0brings up the current user accounts listing window, with the new account:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.secure-bits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/default-accounts-plus-admin.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-961\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.secure-bits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/default-accounts-plus-admin.jpg\" alt=\"Default plus\" width=\"605\" height=\"383\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.secure-bits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/default-accounts-plus-admin.jpg 605w, https:\/\/blogs.secure-bits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/default-accounts-plus-admin-473x300.jpg 473w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 605px) 100vw, 605px\" \/><\/a><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">There&#8217;s no\u00a0requirements\u00a0for creating a password for the\u00a0new\u00a0account and it is created\u00a0by the system with no password.\u00a0In the computer world, no password <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">is<\/span> a password. Depending on the password policy on the system, you could:<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<ul style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Logon with the new account without password<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The first logon will force you to change the password<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">You\u00a0have couple of choices for setting a password for the new account:<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<ol style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Set the password using the Control panel<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Change password at time of first logon with the new account<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Login with no password and change it<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">In either case, you should set a password that is 6-8 character long, non-dictionary\u00a0word, include a number, and\/or special character.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Log off your account and proceed to the next step&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step two:<\/strong><br \/>\nThis is a simple step, just select the newly created account, type in the password, and hit &#8220;Enter&#8221; to login with the new account. Initially, Windows will\u00a0set up the new\u00a0account and starts up the new profile.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step three:<\/strong><br \/>\nIn this step, you&#8217;ll remove administrator access from the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8220;%Default first user%&#8221;,<\/span> again, please substitute the this name with your account&#8217;s name. As explained earlier, open Control Panel, under the \u201cUser Account and Family Safety\u201d category, click on \u201cAdd or remove user accounts\u201d:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.secure-bits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/default-accounts-plus-admin.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-961\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.secure-bits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/default-accounts-plus-admin.jpg\" alt=\"Default plus\" width=\"605\" height=\"383\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.secure-bits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/default-accounts-plus-admin.jpg 605w, https:\/\/blogs.secure-bits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/default-accounts-plus-admin-473x300.jpg 473w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 605px) 100vw, 605px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nClick on the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8220;%Default first user%&#8221;<\/span>, substitute this variable with the name of your account to show the available options:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.secure-bits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/change1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-966\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.secure-bits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/change1.jpg\" alt=\"Change options\" width=\"600\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.secure-bits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/change1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blogs.secure-bits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/change1-500x167.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The options include &#8220;Create a password&#8221; that you could use in &#8220;Step one&#8221; for setting the password for the new account created.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Click on change the account type:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.secure-bits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/change-standard-user.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-968\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.secure-bits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/change-standard-user.jpg\" alt=\"Change user type\" width=\"605\" height=\"374\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.secure-bits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/change-standard-user.jpg 605w, https:\/\/blogs.secure-bits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/change-standard-user-485x300.jpg 485w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 605px) 100vw, 605px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nSelect &#8220;Standard user&#8221; and click on &#8220;Change Account Type&#8221;:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.secure-bits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/end_results.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-971\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.secure-bits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/end_results.jpg\" alt=\"It's done\" width=\"601\" height=\"384\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.secure-bits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/end_results.jpg 601w, https:\/\/blogs.secure-bits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/end_results-469x300.jpg 469w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 601px) 100vw, 601px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;re pretty much done, logoff from the new administrator account. Test the modified account without local administrator access to the system, logon with this account. Your personalization of desktop, shortcuts, etc., did not change. Most if not all programs will run just fine with standard user access to the system. For programs that require administrator level access, the system will popup a UAC warning. You really should consider replacing this program, but that might not be an option.
